Lifar’s Dazzling Masterpiece Meets Bélingard’s Innovative Choreography

Serge Lifar’s dazzling masterpiece meets Jérémie Bélingard’s innovative choreography in a double-bill titled Dancing | Forward. Lifar’s crown jewel Suite en blanc is a brilliant neo-classical ballet – an amazing display of precision and beauty. Starting his career in Les Ballets Russes, Lifar took classic ballet to new heights in the 20th century.

The second choreographer of the evening, Jérémie Bélingard, whose style is creative and poetic, has danced Lifar’s works himself. Together with the Royal Swedish Ballet, he has created a brand new piece that puts the company’s skills to the test.

The Finish National Opera & Ballet Helsinki

The Finish National Opera & Ballet Helsinki presents  A French soirée – Carolyn Carlson – Serge Lifar

From 28.09.2018 to 20.10.2018

Two poetic dance stories

A French soiree presents two totally different dance works – naturally with a good dose of French elegance. Carolyn Carlson’s Pneuma is sophisticated and philosophical, an ode to humanity. Serge Lifar’s Suite en Blanc radiates the style and glamour of pure classical ballet.

Though neither choreographer is French by birth, their work exudes a quintessentially French attitude. Each luxurious performance is flawless in its elegance. Très chic!

Recommended for children over the age of 9.

Exhibition – Picasso and Dance – Working for the ballet

In 1962, Serge Lifar was invited by the Paris Opera to recreate his ballet Icare. The plot he composed was inspired by Greek mythology – with the wings made by his father Daedalus, Icarus launches himself into the air, but intoxicated by the act of flying, he goes too close to the sun, the wax of his wings melts and he falls into the sea. Created in 1935, the ballet was a manifesto where the dancing was choreographed separately from the music. In addition to the choreography, Lifar was in charge of the “rhythms” that accompany it, orchestrated by Arthur Honegger.
For this reproduction, the former dancer designed new costumes himself and suggested to his friend Picasso, whom he had met through the Ballets Russes in the 1920s, that he create the set and stage curtain. Picasso had not worked on any more ballets since 1924, with the exception of a curtain for Roland Petit’s Le Rendez-vous (1945), based on an existing design. The artist nevertheless agreed to design this new piece – he provided Lifar with a sketch reminiscent of another “fall of Icarus”, that of the fresco he painted in 1958 for the UNESCO headquarters.
